Charles’s career is centered on the intersection of finance and law. He has worked in financial publishing, credit analysis, investment banking and consulting. He has structured and sold multi-billion dollar financings, but has also helped people recover less than one hundred dollars.
He began his career at the law firm of Thacher Proffitt & Wood as a senior paralegal where he reviewed mortgage documentation for adequacy of title, prepared closing documents for whole loan transactions and helped structure mortgage-backed securities. After studying law at New York Law School, Charles began working at First Albany (now Jefferies and Company) in the Municipal Investment Banking group. He structured tax-exempt securitizations, revenue bonds, project finance bonds, and housing bonds. Charles then moved to Fitch Ratings in New York and then the London office where he rated structured products.
In 2004, Charles joined the Royal Bank of Canada’s Infrastructure Group to provide advice and guidance on rating infrastructure bonds and to explore the use of off-balance sheet funding options for RBC’s portfolio of infrastructure loans. In 2006, he moved to the Structured Products desk where he structured and traded mortgage-related derivatives. In 2010, Charles joined Valere Capital where he provided financial analysis and expert witness support. In 2015, Charles opened the New York office of Valere to provide law firms and their clients with expert witness and litigation advisory services.
Charles has a B.A. in English and American literature and Russian language from New York University and a Juris Doctorate from New York Law School. He was a Financial Conduct Authority Approved Person with a Certificate in Securities and Financial Derivatives and held FINRA’s Series 7 and 63 licenses. He is a CELTA-certified English Instructor. Charles became a member of the Maryland bar in June of 2016 and was admitted to practice before the United States District Court for the District of Maryland in January of 2019.
Charles lives in Baltimore County, Maryland, with his wife, two kids, plus a lively dog. After many years of living and working abroad, he speaks conversational Spanish, some French and a little Russian. He is always on the lookout for good restaurants and wine, and enjoys exploring all of the great things that Maryland has to offer.
